If you counted, you’d find that there are 22 lakes in Sparta Township. Lake Mohawk and Lake Hopatcong are just two of these popular family gathering spots. Given the abundance of lakes in our area, it’s no surprise that swim lessons and water safety rank so high in the minds of Sparta parents.
Our Njswim Sparta location not only teaches water safety to students and the community—it serves as a place where families can relax, have fun, and learn in a safe water environment.
Most of our swim students come from Sparta, Andover, Newton, Franklin, Jefferson, and Byram—however, we welcome families from all over to join our school.
Njswim has six swim schools in New Jersey.
Julia Eckhardt, our Director of Operations, talks about our swim school philosophy. Watch our young students have fun as they learn.
The Njswim Learn to Float Philosophy
Njswim offers classes to children between the ages of three months and fifteen years. Lessons can be private, semi-private or group. We know the importance of keeping class size small, so group lessons never exceed a 3:1 student to teacher ratio.
We promote a “learn to float” philosophy for teaching swimming. Our swim teachers first focus on students developing proper body position and breath control in the water. Children learn to recognize their natural buoyancy. Once mastered, teachers encourage students to focus on strokes.
The result is children who are more natural swimmers. They learn to work with and love the water, instead of fighting and fearing it.
Our goal is to not only teach students to swim, but to teach water survival skills.
Highly Trained Swim Teachers Make a Difference
Our swim teachers go through extensive training. They understand childhood development and that each child progresses at their own rate.
At Njswim, a child has the same swim teacher each week. This serves two important purposes: The child feels comfortable learning from someone they know, and the teacher closely monitors their progress from week-to-week.
At the right time, the instructor says it’s time to move on to the next class, and the child moves up a level in our swim program.
This evaluation, based on individual progress, ensures your child will never be ahead of others or behind in a class. They will always be in a class that fits their current skill level.
Safety First
Not only are our swim teachers trained in teaching swimming to children—they are also fully certified lifeguards that hold CPR and First Aid certification.
Additionally, a lifeguard is always on duty along with a deck supervisor.
We Take Fun Seriously, Too
Sure, learning to swim and staying safe is serious business. But that doesn’t mean we can’t all have fun in the process! Children and teachers laugh a lot during lessons. That’s because our teachers love teaching, so our kids enjoy learning.
We always encourage our students to experience the joys of being in the water. Ask any of our swim families and they will tell you that Njswim Sparta is a happy place to visit.
Sparta Community Involvement
The way we see it, people who come to Njswim for lessons are not our clients—they are our family. And we want our families and our community to stay water safe.
We work to inform everyone about:
- The importance of learning to swim
- Water safety
- Drowning prevention
Stop Drowning Now / Safer 3 Water Safety
Stop Drowning Now is a global non-profit group that provides water safety education to save lives. Njswim’s owner and founder, Joe Oehme, is proud to be a member of Stop Drowning Now’s Board.
Njswim promotes the group’s Safer 3 curriculum, with the goal of saving children from accidental drownings.
Through this program, young children learn about water safety and how to recognize drowning risks. Children also learn how to protect themselves and others when in and around water. Should a water emergency happen, these kids will know the safe steps to take to prevent an avoidable tragedy from occurring.
The three components of the Safer 3 program are:
- Safer water
- Safer kids
- Safer response
We bring this water safety presentation to local pre-schools and public schools. This way we reach many kids who don’t take swim lessons. Every time a child learns how to be smarter and safer around water, we help keep that kid safe. Our swim school is dedicated to this mission.
We are very grateful to our community members who encourage and support this educational outreach program.
