We would like you to meet our new Njswim Florham Park Location Manager—Mike Quartucci.
Mike’s commitment to Njswim school, his love of swimming, and his dedication to his swim team and students, continue to make our Florham Park location an ideal place for our teachers, young swimmers, and their families.
He has enjoyed swimming recreationally for his entire life. At age 15, Mike made swimming part of his personal fitness journey. He especially enjoys the opportunity to meet many types of people through this sport.
Mike’s association with Njswim goes back six years. He originally worked as a Lifeguard/Swim Teacher at our Lakeside location, and taught swimming lessons at Florham Park.
He became Florham Park’s Location Manager in August 2022. He continues to teach all Njswim class levels, as well as Power Swim and the Njswim Red Cross Lifeguard Certification classes.
Mike enjoys teaching children of all ages. He enjoys “seeing students come out of their shell, show their own personality, and be able to interact with both children and adults.”
These life skills, nurtured at Njswim, will go way beyond swimming, and serve students well throughout their lifetimes.
A graduate of William Paterson University with a B.S. in K-12 Physical Education and Health, Mike is currently training for his first Half Iron Man Triathlon. This exciting race includes a:
- 2-mile swim
- 56-mile bike ride
- 1-mile run
For more information about him, read Mike Quartucci’s bio.
Njswim American Red Cross Lifeguard Course
Mike teaches our American Red Cross Lifeguard Course.
The three American Red Cross lifeguard certification courses offered at Njswim are:
- Shallow water training—for lifeguard certification in any pool up to 5 feet deep
- Deep water training—for lifeguard certification for any pool or any depth
- Waterfront training—for any pool or lake beach
This course includes:
- Basic water safety
- Preventing, recognizing, and responding to water emergencies
- CPR for breathing and cardiac emergencies
- Other procedures for help with injuries and sudden illness until EMS arrives
Mike stresses that a good lifeguard needs “an eye for detail, and to understand the seriousness and responsibility of the job”.
Training lifeguards is something Mike takes seriously. He has early memories of seeing lifeguards acting unprofessionally or missing an opportunity to assist when they should have.
Today Mike enjoys teaching lifeguard courses as an opportunity to help high school students develop life skills, as well as help them develop a professional expertise.
When asked if he had any specific stories about students who had completed the lifeguard course, he talked about one student who told him she saved her father’s life by administering the abdominal thrust rescue learned in the course.

Njswim Florham Park’s Swim Team
Mike describes Njswim’s swim team philosophy as “teaching with a Zen mentality”. And he states that, “We encourage swim teachers to have great patience, teach with love and encouragement, and help swimmers to learn their own strength.”
Our teachers know each child is an individual; they are motivated to help students grow and achieve at their own pace.
What Mike enjoys most about being Florham Park’s Location Manager, is “seeing [his] younger team members help a swimmer achieve a new skill and witnessing the joy and confidence this brings both the swimmer and the younger teacher.”

Njswim Continuing Education Conference
Mike recently participated in the Njswim conference held on November 2, 2022. We hold this conference every few years as part of the continuing education for Njswim leadership and swim teams. This program focuses on personal development and effective teaching.
The speaker/facilitator was Bruce Sullivan, an internationally recognized keynote speaker, author, and business leader. Njswim’s founder, Joe Oehme, originally met Bruce Sullivan when he was speaking at a US Swim School Association meeting.
