WATER SAFETY & SWIM LESSONS
Swim Lessons Reduce Drowning Risk by up to 88%
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1-4. Here’s what every parent should know and how Emler’s SwimSure™ curriculum has been building water safety skills for over 50 years.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons can begin as early as age 1. NJ Swim’s Bathtime Babies program starts at 2 months old with parent participation, introducing water safety fundamentals from the earliest stage of development.

NJ Swim teachers aren’t just certified once, training is built into every week on the pool deck. Teachers who lead Parent-Participation lessons also receive additional, specialized training to coach both swimmers and parents.
Multi-stage training. In-water instruction, online learning modules, and interactive workshops, all completed before ever leading a class.
Safety Minutes & H2O sessions. Real-world lessons shared across teams, plus continued coaching and safety scenario reviews.
Safety drills & EAP refreshers. Hands-on Emergency Action Plan practice keeps every team ready for any situation.
Water Watcher supervision. Dedicated modules promote active, vigilant supervision whenever children are in the water.
It goes beyond our teachers: multiple staff members are on deck and in the pool at all times, a Manager on Duty oversees every shift, and clear whistle protocols keep pool communication controlled and responsive. Safety preparedness is built into our facility guidelines and instructor evaluations, because at NJ Swim, safety isn’t just a lesson plan. It’s a promise.
Most drowning incidents happen when no one expects it. When a child falls in fully clothed, during non-swim time. NJ Swim School prepares children for those moments.

How and when to use a life jacket — and why it doesn’t replace swim skill.

We have both new and veteran instructors and all share the same caring heart and passion for water safety. Whether your teacher is brand new or has been with us for years, they all go through the same rigorous training program to ensure quality instruction.
Yes. Instructors for Bathtime Babies® and toddler-level classes complete specialized training designed to meet the unique needs of young swimmers. This preparation helps create a nurturing, developmentally appropriate learning environment.
Yes. Our teachers participate in ongoing workshops, team “Huddle 2 Optimize” meetings, and safety drills, including Emergency Action Plan (EAP) practice. This ensures they are always up to date on teaching techniques and safety protocols.
All instructors complete extensive training before leading classes. This includes online curriculum work, an exam, and over 30 hours of in-water training alongside a certified mentor teacher. Instructors must also pass an in-water assessment before teaching on their own.
Quick questions can be asked at the end of class. For more detailed discussions, speak with the Manager on Duty to ensure instructors can stay on schedule.

NJSwim’s commitment to water safety
Water safety is the heart of everything we teach at NJSwim. Our goal is to help families learn simple habits that make a real difference in and around the water. From close supervision and safe pool rules to strong beginner skills, we guide swimmers and parents on how to prevent accidents and stay confident in any water setting.
We teach children how to respect the water, understand their limits, and build the skills they need to stay safe. Parents learn how to support their swimmers, create safe environments, and understand the steps that matter most. Together, these practices help families enjoy the water with peace of mind.
